Real Racing

After the 1999 season, it is unknown as to whether or not the Real Racing Roots series is still ongoing. It is presumed that after Ridge Racer Type 4, the racing series might have folded, or might have lived on in the later games (even in Ridge Racer V and PSP) before being renamed to the Ridge Universe league in 6, then again to the Ridge State Grand Prix, sponsored by the UFRA, in 7.

You can probably tell by the size of the yachts in Monaco's harbour, the opulence of the motorhomes that form a worldwide series' travelling circus or the amount of inbreeding evident around the paddock of Silverstone on a Grand Prix weekend that motor racing is a rich man's game. You can't just turn up to the races with a pair of fresh boots and a big heart: a single season in Formula Ford, one of the most junior of categories on the national scene, costs in excess of 120,000.

So kudos to Firemonkeys, the new outfit forged by EA from esteemed Australian mobile studios Firemint and Iron Monkey, for being the first developer to fully realise the crippling costs of motorsport in interactive form. Here's a game that's not shy about handing you repair bills at the end of a race and one that doesn't blush over an in-game car that costs almost 60 in real-world money.

In fairness to Real Racing 3, there's a lot more to its authenticity, and it's not all quite so grating. An extension of Firemint's deservedly popular racing series, this continues the good work of its predecessors on track, and it strives yet further to back up the 'Real' part of its racing. Licensed cars are now given licensed circuits to bound around, and it's a move that does much to help the series attain its dream of being a real sim on a mobile device.

In Real Racing 3, you need to win races to make in-game cash and earn fame points. The in-game cash (R$) lets you upgrade your current car or buy new cars to qualify for different racing series. Fame points help you gain levels, with cash and gold coin bonuses at each acquired level. With your first car you'll be qualified for the Pure Stock Challenge and the Road Car International, both of which have a series of races you can compete in that include cups, elimination rounds, head-to-head challenges, and even drag races. But to race in the game's many other racing series, you'll need to buy one of the cars featured in the series to unlock it.

But here's where the freemium model comes into play. Every time you initiate an upgrade or maintenance task for your car, there's a wait time associated with each service. Changing your oil takes only 15 minutes, but more-complex upgrades can take hours to complete. Until the upgrade is complete, you cannot race with that car. You can choose to turn the game off for a little while to wait it out, or take the quick route of using your gold coins for immediate gratification. You only get a limited number of gold coins to start with, but you earn more as you move up in levels. Real Racing 3 lets you use real money to buy both in-game cash with which to buy new cars, and gold coins to speed up upgrades and repairs. I've found that using gold coins for some updates while waiting others out is not too painful, but your mileage may vary.

Still, even with the freemium model, Real Racing 3 manages to continue holding the crown as the best racing game on a touch screen. Anyone who liked the earlier versions of the game or just likes speeding around a racetrack should download this game immediately.

An increase in top speed isn't going to help on most tracks and challenges. Engine upgrades tend to offer better results in top speed, but less in terms of acceleration. In a lot of the races in RR3, lower 0-60 times will benefit much more than being able to go 195mph. The start is crucial, and getting away from the line and up to racing speed quicker will ultimately gain you more places in the early part of the race, and being able to pull away from corners quicker than your opponents will help you consolidate your position once you've passed them. So, look to upgrading the drivetrain before the engine, get that 0-60 time down. Also look at combining this with reducing the weight of your car.

This comes with playing time, but as you become familiar with the circuits make sure you take note as to which layout you're racing on. This will affect your mindset, and possibly even your choice of car going into a race. For example, all Cup races at Laguna Seca will see you starting 22nd on the grid, which puts you the other side of the final turn. So you're already at a disadvantage, with a slow corner to negotiate before even hitting the start/finish straight. Here you'll want to be in the absolute fastest car you have for the race. Likewise at Silverstone, there are three different configurations, with two different start lines. Both see you starting a cup race on a turn, but the National layout sees you use a completely different part of the circuit to the International layout, while the Grand Prix layout combines both. Considering the track before the race is almost as important to success as the car you choose.

It isn't everything, but naturally it is important. What's going to win you drag races is timing. Since RR3 uses Time Shifted Multiplayer, your opponent is a real person who went down that same strip. You time your run to perfection and you stand a solid chance even if you're lacking a few horses over them. The launch is key, but remember that the delay between the red and green lights varies through rounds, so don't get caught out and false start. Once you're off the line, glue your eyes to the rev counter. Hit the sweet spot for each gear change just below the red line, and you're on for a good run. The counter will stop or bounce around just at the top of the red line depending on the car, but hit the gear changes at the right spot and you won't be caught. Well, not always, anyway.

OK, that's not really what you need to do, but you can earn extra gold by sharing your results with your friends on Facebook. You can also share to Sina Weibo if you're in a supported region. But, for five free gold, who cares what your friends think, right? Such a shame I don't use Facebook...

So, that's a few of my own tips and tricks to getting the most out of Real Racing 3, but I've only really scratched the surface. If you've got any others, be sure to drop into the comments below. I know I'm always trying to make my game better, as I'm sure a lot of you guys are!

Obviously this has something to do with version but everytime I try and download it again, the app store ALWAYS pulls it from the iCloud. I have tried deleting it from the iCloud but all of the data never is erased. So to be honest, I really haven't "truly" deleted the app. So I can assume that's part of the issue also.
